Search Engine Optimization (SEO): The Art Of Networking

Wikipedia defines the World Wide Web (“Web”) as “a system of interlinked, hypertext documents that runs over the Internet. With a Web browser, a user views Web pages that may contain text, images, and other multimedia and navigates between them using hyperlinks.” The Web has only been around since 1990, and yet, it already counts trillions of Web pages.

With so much information and the number of Web surfers increasing on a daily basis, the challenge of directing users to the appropriate source of information is becoming increasingly complex. That role belongs to search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN who are competing fiercely in order to come up with the best and most accurate search results. Search engines act as “filters” in differentiating between the relevant and the irrelevant. Yet, how do they know what is “relevant” and what is “irrelevant” or “less relevant”?

They rely on whatever is found on a Web page and they rely on links that direct to a specific Web page. Whatever is found on a Web page can easily be manipulated, but what is found on another person’s Web page is harder to control. That leads us to the intrinsic nature of the Web, which is a network of “interconnected” Web pages. The connectedness of Web pages is complicated by the fact that webmasters, the creators of the Web pages, have their own agenda, which often conflicts with the objectives of Web surfers. Webmasters want to increase their websites’ exposure (which would translate into increased traffic), whereas Web surfers want to find information that is the most relevant to them. It is in this type of environment that search engines come into play in trying to act as arbitrators.

How do they do that? They evaluate the quality, relevancy, and weight of each incoming link in order to assign a value to it. The whole idea is based on the “democratic” nature of the Web. Why is it necessary for search engines to “assign a value” to incoming links (or, in other words, why aren’t all links of equal value)? Because search engines recognize the fact that “Corruption” exists within the system and assigning a value to incoming links is a way to fight that corruption. The corruption comes mainly from webmasters that are trying to bend the rules in their favour in order to achieve higher rankings.

In this kind of environment, how to maximize a website’s exposure while respecting generally accepted guidelines of website development and promotion? By networking with other websites and making the case for votes. Sounds like an election? It is! Except that this election does not take place every four years, but every minute of every day, with no end in sight. The never-ending election it is called.

There are two facets to networking: (1) expanding a network and (2) strengthening a network. Expanding a network means to have the most exposure as possible while strengthening a network means getting votes. Other webmasters might know about a certain site, but they are under no obligation to link to that site. In that regard, the easy way to win a vote is to provide some incentives to other sites, meaning paying them a fee to add a link on their site (“sponsored link”) or reciprocating with a link back. The problem with this approach is that it costs money, is time consuming, and might only trigger a “vote” coming from a “link exchange” page, which is of poor quality. A more difficult approach to networking is to create “partnerships” with other websites where each side would benefit or creating quality content that would warrant inbound links.

This latter approach to networking has the advantage of (1) creating links that are more contextual, meaning that they will also have more value for search engines; (2) costing nothing because they are given out of free will; and (3) meeting accepted guidelines of proper website development.

This is where the two aspects of search engine optimization connect. On-page and off-page optimization go hand in hand because quality content is key to successful and sustainable networking. This is also where webmasters and Web users connect as quality content is also what most people are looking for when they search the Web.

Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) really worth the price?
I’m a very small startup social networking site and I need traffic; however, when I checked the prices for SEO, I was shocked at the prices. Maybe I’m just naive or SEO is definately worth the price it demands.

Any opinions on how effective SEO’s are and if the prices are worth its reputation?

For example, the cost for SEO and maintenance for 3 keywords is $500 setup fee and $200 annual maintenance. For 20 keywords, it is $2,300 setup fee and $1,000 annual maintenance.

    I know some SEO’s go as expensive s $25,000 – $100,000.

There are other ways to do SEO, like using good keywords and using tags and such. There are great websites out there that allow you to make your website come up in a search engine. They give you many tips. do not pay anything for SEO. Try to put as much keywords in your content as possible and try to use more tags.

SEO charges may be shocking in light of the simple fact that most website owners and designers do not know how to go about on their own to achieve high SEO rankings. Here’s a step-by-step procedure on how to achieve and acquire large net traffic.

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
    Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
    very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using
such "generic" queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
    at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who’s my end user – is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
    is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

    Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 60 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic terms, the goods and services, followed by a location from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state. The placement of a domain name which is not generic within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually up to 41 words to form a complete paragraph which
best describes one’s goods and services. It is not merely a list.

And the very last category – "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
    directory.

Here’s an example of a very highly-placed website on
Google.com: Begin with the very "generic" search query
"sandwiches downtown los angeles," taking note to not
abbreviate Los Angeles to "LA" and of course, leave
out the parentheses ("). It will bring up some 2.4
million+ search results. Check out where "Nazos.net"
is ranked. It’s on the SECOND FRONT [ranked 15]!
Again, Nazos.net’s high web presence was achieved by
proper web design and placement of relevant metatags
    according to Google’s publication guidelines.

    Good luck!

Try this for a start instead.

It’s rarely an instant return on the Internet. You need your website coming up relevant to what people "search for" on the Internet. It takes time to get placement in the right places within the Internet and if you’re listed in the right category of searches you stand a better chance of returns. The following is one of the better ways.

For a small charge you can have a “Permanent” website advertisement placed in an index such as this in a choice of around 750 categories to target your business trade.

This will raise your website profile and increase its chances of extra sales because this site is indexed by the search engines placing your site within public searches.

The advantage of a site like this is that you don’t have to update your listing again.

  8. Rob F says:

Optimization can be worth it, however it really depends on the keyword market & who you decide to hire to work with your website.

First off, though, there are no guarantees with search optimization; ever. You could fork over that money & be no better off than you are today, but an ethical optimization firm would let you know if you’re heading into a keyword market with hardened competition. Of course there are tactics that have consistently proven to improve a websites rankings in certain search engines for certain terms. . . but at the end of the day, unless a SEO has direct access to a search engine’s database; they can’t guarantee placement anymore than they can guarantee that they will live to be 90 years old.

Also, unless you already know what keywords will convert into members for your site, you’ll likely want to (at least should heavily consider) spend money on PPC (pay per click) advertising before you spend any large amount on natural optimization methods. By using PPC first, you can pinpoint the keywords that convert into members instead of merely guessing; this is something that your optimization firm should tell you as well. If the optimization firm simply asks you what terms you want to rank for and pursues that no-questions asked; this is probably a company you should avoid at all costs as they are the experts & that’s why you’re hiring them.

I guess the bottom line is that optimization can be worth the price if you find the right person /company to do it for you. . . but it’s a crapshoot finding an affordable & experienced SEO that knows the ins & outs of the business.

It’s been suggested that you learn some things for yourself, and that is recommended. However, you can’t simply go to a webmaster forum & take what people have to say there; there are a lot of well-intentioned people there that try to help, but many of them are simply parrots relaying what they’ve read on some other forum or webmaster blog without any personal experience to backup what they’re suggesting.

In any case, tread carefully & good luck.

You have to check out http://www.seogodfather.com It fully automates the SEO process without spending the big bucks on the outside services. It cost like $98 and is well worth it. You stay in complete control of keywords, phases and everything, but, it does all the work. You just have to turn it on once a day and walk away. I’ve been using it with one of online businesses and I’m getting really good results.
It primarily works using medium density keywords. Which still gives you really god results, without trying to compete with the big huge websites!

Great blog..thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  14. I know the idea of spending thousands of dollars on SEO may sound crazy, but think of SEO as simply another form of advertising. I do not agree with the posters who stated that you don’t need to pay for SEO. Whether you should pay for SEO or not should be a value of time decision, not a money decision. I.e., when you buy SEO services, you are purchasing the time that it takes a SEO expert to perform seo services on your website. It’s like an SEO company is going to do something that you aren’t able to do, but if you don’t have the time to do SEO yourself, buying SEO services is worth the investment.

If you want to do SEO yourself, there are many legit software programs that can help you automate the process. Without being overly self-promotional, you can check out some of my tools here: http://www.thesearchlounge.com/Website-Promotion-Software.html
