I cannot really comment on the US but I can tell you for definite the UK is all but a police state in name only.
The average UK citizen is video taped via CCTV 300 times per day. We are not allowed to own fire arms and at the same time the police service are being armed.
If a person is detained by the police with out charge there DNA is taken and held on the DNA data base for life. We are not talking about convicted murderers or even charged suspects, we are talking about anybody who the police think are acting suspicious.
The UK has banned all smoking in public places, pubs, clubs etc. There was no allowance for individual businesses to decide for them selves what was best for there business.
New passport applicants have to attend a mandatory interview to determine they are how they say they are.
ID cards will be with us soon, these cards will hold, eye scans, finger prints, driving license detail, criminal convictions, etc and there will be capacity for much more.
In short the US is by the sound of things making the same mistake as the UK.
Both Governments are taking away our civil liberties in a some vain attempt to protect us from terrorists.
