We have by now all seen much of this material before, but reading it all in one piece, told by human voices in this book-length interview, is not easy to take. “Guantánamo: What the World Should Know” (Chelsea Green) by Michael Ratner and Ellen Ray becomes a heart-stopper once you cross the line and realize that you could be any of these victims.
Michael Ratner, President of the Center for Constitutional Rights, is co-counsel in Rasul v. Bush, the historic case of Guantánamo detainees now before the U.S. Supreme Court. His interviewer, Ellen Ray, is President of the Institute for Media Analysis, and a widely published author and editor on U.S. intelligence and international politics.
It’s hard to say which is more disgusting, the descriptions of the torture or the bone-chilling analyses of how the president of the United States gave himself the powers of an absolute military dictator. Under Military Order No. 1, which the president issued without congressional authority on November 13, 2001, George W. Bush has ordered people captured or detained from all over the world, flown to Guantánamo and tortured in a lawless zone where, the White House asserts, prisoners have no rights of any kind at all and can be kept forever at his pleasure. Despite the at-best marginal intervention of the American courts so far, there is no civilian judicial review, no due process of any kind.
While any military force will routinely violate the civil rights of anyone who gets in its way, Ratner’s descriptions of how victims wound up in Guantánamo reveal wanton cruelty and callousness that will nauseate any sane human being.
Ratner writes: “A lot of the people picked up by warlords of the Northern Alliance were kept in metal shipping containers, so tightly packed that they had to ball themselves up, and the heat was unbearable. According to some detainees who were held in the containers and eventually released from Guantánamo, only a small number, thirty to fifty people in a container filled with three to four hundred people survived. And some of those released said that the Americans were in on this, that the Americans were shining lights on the containers. The people inside were suffocating, so the Northern Alliance soldiers shot holes into the containers, killing some of the prisoners inside.”
Some prisoners were captured in battle; many others were picked up in random sweeps for no reason at all except being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As usual in these kinds of operations, some were turned in as a result of petty revenge or as an excuse to steal their property. When asked in court to explain the criteria for detention, the government had no answer. There were no criteria, it appears. “The government even made the ridiculous argument before the Supreme Court that the prisoners get to tell their side of the story, by being interrogated,” Ratner reports.
Ratner notes that 134 of the 147 prisoners later released from Guantánamo were guilty of absolutely nothing. Only thirteen were sent on to jail. He believes it is possible that a substantial majority of the Guantánamo prisoners had nothing to do with any kind of terrorism. One prisoner released after a year claimed he was somewhere between ninety and one hundred years old, according to Ratner. Old, frail and incontinent, he wept constantly, shackled to a walker.

Why do Democrats still dodge questions about their astonishing corruption by accusing the GOP?
Blaming the GOP does not make Democrat corruption go away.
Democrat corruption is real, and it must be addressed. This is by far the most outrageously corrupt government I have ever seen in my entire life.
It’s time for rank and file Democrats to stop dodging the question, and face the reality of how corrupt their party has become.
We really are on the brink of tyranny. Democrats need to stop giggling and taunting and pointing fingers, and face the reality of where our nation is really headed right now.

This strategy will go over as well as Obama’s policies have since he has become President. There is a reason why Obama’s and Democrat poll numbers have sunk. One year into the Obama Presidency and it is no longer about GWB. Certainly by 2010 no one wants to hear the blame game.
No matter how the Democrats want to spin this, the 2010 midterms are going to be a referendum on Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. We the People will take care of matters in 2010 and create some real CHANGE the likes that has not been seen in years.
The Obama administration is desperate to pass this health care legislation and I believe that all Americans are now aware of this. But what has happened to the morals and character of this great nation that the people and the media seem to be OK with “how” Obama is getting this bill passed? What has happened to any sense of decency in our Congress and from our elected officials?
Obama knows that he just needs 60 votes to get this bill passed through Congress – and most of these Congressional imbeciles will readily do whatever Obama wants – even if it means selling out the taxpayers. But there are a few “holdouts” who just weren’t sure as to whether they would vote “yes” or “no”. So what does Obama do? He openly and without shame bribes them! Blatantly and un-constitutionally doling out millions of taxpayer dollars to be used in the payoffs!
Senator Ben Nelson, Nebraska – Took a $100 Million bribe to change his vote to “yes”. He was against the federal government paying for abortions – he was adamantly against abortion – that is until Obama gave him $100 Million. How much would you require to sell out the American people? Would you sell your soul and that of the American people for $100 Million? Nelson did.

Senator Mary Landrieu, Louisiana – She was adamantly against the health care bill – that is until Obama doled out $300 Million to her and her state. Voila! She changed her vote to “yes”. So, Nebraska and Louisiana are all set. Do you want to pay extra for Louisiana and Nebraska? Well, Obama wants you to – he doesn’t care – he is forcing you to pay more to these states – how do you like that?

The reason Obama is life or death with this bill is because this bill fundamentally changes the way the American government operates. It gives the federal government massive amounts of additional power and control – just what the Marxist obama wants.

Mainstream news media doing its job?
Just curious for your thoughts. How much do you trust mainstream television news, and news papers…. Would you seek out alternative news sources, or do you just not care? I know there are polls, but I’d like to see some narratives.
I suspect that they don’t.
Money and advertising prevents them from reporting the truth about pollution, business abuses, lawsuits, etc… The fact that most media outlets are owned by a cooperative oligarchy means that we’ll never hear any news that isn’t pro-business or at least sympathetic to business.
Our masters rule through commercialism. We are domesticated animals whose purpose is the consumption of materialistic garbage. Our whole world is based on rich white men brainwashing us into buying plastic junk made by slaves overseas so that they can steal the fruits of our labor.
We have been stripped of all the things that truly matter: companionship, community and intimacy. These things have been taken from us because our free time has been taken from us. We work constantly just to obtain the basic inputs necessary for survival. We are so exhausted from our efforts that the only enjoyable thing we have the energy or time for is TV or shopping.
The "news" is just part of the system that controls us.
Think about politics. Democrat vs. Republican vs. Centrist; does this truly cover the realm of political ideas? To say this is the equivalent to saying the religion is Methodist vs. Baptist vs. Lutheran. Certainly, there is more to choose from in religion than these three relatively similar sects. But when people are exposed to politics on TV, they seem to accept this narrowing of ideas.
Our news fails. They sell us what they tell us we want. We never get what we need: truth.
Journalism, done properly, is a SCIENCE. It is the science of data mining, of searching for the context of the data, of seeing the historical narrative and most importantly being objective.
The "liberal" bias that the news agencies are accused of is usually just an attack leveled at any news item that achieves this scientific goal.

What can we do as average citizens to fight the corruption in washington?
