Hampton has shown no willingness to conduct a background check of new applicants for his Web Police agency, despite having admitted that the current staff of the Web Police is made up of individuals with police records, including convicted felons. Hampton has further admitted to possessing a police record of his own, but refused to elaborate on either the charges or circumstances surrounding that record. Shockingly enough, the glaring problems with the application process has permitted not only felons, but minors as well, to investigate charges of serious crimes being committed on the Internet. Without a background check, who at the IWP can say without a doubt that there are no pedophiles on staff sifting through a minorÂ?s personal information? The dangers and risks of such ignorant practices are clearly evident.

Further proof of their ignorance and negligence can be found in the apparent violation of peopleÂ?s privacy and civil rights as unverified and often uninvestigated Â?crime complaintsÂ? are published prominently on the IWP website disclosing personal contact information of not only the complainants, but also that of alleged suspects for the full inspection of the public.

In view of the above, some serious concerns exist regarding the submission of crime complaints to the International Web Police site. Are they being referred to legitimate law enforcement agencies for action or are the IWP as their mission statement implies, investigating and prosecuting their own cases?

Hampton’s International Web Police agency and its affiliated sites claim to operate under the knowledge, consent, and cooperation of recognized law enforcement agencies worldwide to insure the safety of the general public on the World Wide Web. However, many verifiable law enforcement institutions do not acknowledge Hampton’s claims of international cooperation from governmental, agency, and departmental levels. Peter Robbins, the Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Watch Foundation based in the UK says of the International Web Police, “I have never heard of them and they certainly don’t have any remit in the UK.”

Similarly, Detective Constable Tim Hinks of the Economic and Specialist Crime Unit of the London Metropolitan Police states that the Web Police “are not recognized by any UK force” and the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit for the United Kingdom states that International Web Police web site “is not one that is known to our Unit and (we) doubt that it has any authority from the Home Office. (We) would have thought that had it been a recognized agency that it would have been heard of here at the NHTCU.”

While no local or international law enforcement agency recognizes or concedes the authority to act on their behalf, the International Web Police continue to operate, insisting still that they are “the official Police Agency on the InternetÂ?. The claim has attracted the attention of the state of Florida’s Department of Legal Affairs Office of Statewide Prosecution, which has formally notified the Web Police of their concerns regarding the legality of the organization’s claims and misrepresentations to be “the official Police Agency on the Internet”. The State of Florida made its concerns with Hampton’s claims very clear in a letter sent to the offices of the International Web Police, which stated:

“We have reason to believe that the International Web Police is actually not an official police organization according to Florida statutes. If this belief is correct, we are requesting that (the IWP), as a public service, clarify and qualify (the) representations throughout (their) web pages to assure that this is absolutely clear.Â? – Stephen R. White, Assistant Statewide Prosecutor, Florida Office of Statewide Prosecution.

The growing concern over the representations made by the International Web Police and the highly dubious legal status of the organization has prompted several former “officers” of the Web Police to come forward to express their further concerns over the practices of “the official Police Agency on the Internet” and its founder, Peter Hampton. Their testimony paints a disturbing portrait on an organization which operates outside of the accepted worldwide law enforcement community under the auspices of a founder who’s scandalous personal practices and procedures have led many to the conclusion that he is perhaps more motivated by media exposure and profit than by a genuine concern for the safety and well-being of Internet visitors.

The former agents now speaking out against Hampton and the International Web Police have pooled their experiences with the organization to provide the general public the truth about “the official Police Agency on the Internet” at http://www.web-police-warning.com/. The site features testimonials from former International Web Police agents and outlines the concerns of the law enforcement community over the legitimacy of Peter Hampton’s claims to serve the public interests. The site also details and fully documents Hampton’s possible motivations for deceiving the public on the true nature of his organizations.
